FIRST Broadway musical with an all-female creative team

“Mama, it’s amazing what (women) baking can do”

In 2016 Waitress premiered on Broadway as the first all-female creative team. Once Waitress had a possibility for a Broadway transfer, it was very important for it to be a women dominated team, and that’s exactly what was achieved. With direction by Diane Paulus (Pippin, Finding Neverland), music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles, Choreography by Lorin Latarro and of course, book by Jessie Nelson.

The first Best Musical winner with an exclusively female writer-director team, Anaïs Mitchell and Rachel Chavkin.

Anaïs Mitchell was the first woman in over a decade to write the music, lyrics and book

Not only is Hadestown an incredible musical with a thrilling story, if you take a closer look at your Playbill you’ll see something even more thrilling. Hadestown is the first musical in over a decade to have a woman as the solo author! A wonderful addition to the list, Anaïs Mitchell is only the fourth woman to have written the lyrics, music and book to a musical. The pairing of Mitchell’s work and Rachel Chavkin’s direction earned the duo fourteen Tony Award nominations and eight wins, including best musical.

Gives a voice to the six wives of Henry VIII, and is made up of an all-female cast AND an all-female band!

“Don’t lose your head” over this cast of women!

From the West End all the way to Broadway, SIX has been captivating audiences since 2017. These six women of history put a modern twist on their heartbreaking love stories. Not only is the cast all women but they are backed by an all-female band, aka the “Ladies in Waiting.” Nothing says female empowerment more than six women in fabulous outfits, singing their faces off about how it’s about time that they each tell their own story.
